IMPROVING JAW ALIGNMENT AND FUNCTION

Indications for Corrective Jaw Surgery

Corrective jaw surgery, also known as orthognathic surgery, is a transformative procedure that can significantly improve both the function and appearance of the jaw and face. Corrective jaw surgery is indicated for patients who are experiencing functional issues, aesthetic concerns, or both. This may include:

  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or speaking resulting from misaligned jaws
  • Misaligned bite (overbite, underbite, crossbite)
  • Sleep apnea or other breathing problems
  • Facial asymmetry or imbalance

We provide advanced surgical treatments for a variety of jaw issues, including underbites, overbites, open bites, and facial imbalances. Working closely with your orthodontist, our team ensures a seamless and successful outcome tailored to your unique needs.

Benefits of Corrective Jaw Surgery

Corrective jaw surgery is not just about improving the appearance of the face—though it certainly does that. This procedure can lead to:

  • Functional Improvement: Enhanced chewing, speaking, and breathing capabilities, especially for patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea and/or snoring.
  • Restoration of Facial Balance: Achieving a more natural and proportionate appearance through optimal jaw positioning.

Understanding Orthognathic Surgery

A Guide for Patients and Families Considering Jaw Surgery

Recovery from corrective jaw surgery varies from patient to patient, but typically involves:

You have been recommended jaw surgery as part of a carefully planned treatment approach. This recommendation is never made lightly. Orthognathic (corrective jaw) surgery is considered when the position of the jaws contributes to concerns with bite function, breathing during sleep, facial balance, or a combination of these factors.
To help you better understand the process, Dr Krishnan Parthasarathi has prepared a guide for patients and families considering jaw surgery. The guide is designed to provide clear and practical information about the treatment journey, from initial planning through to recovery.

Inside the guide, you’ll learn more about:

  • Why jaw surgery may be recommended in your situation
  • What the overall treatment journey typically involves
  • What to expect before, during, and after surgery
  • Recovery, healing, and ongoing care following treatment

Recovery Process

Recovery from corrective jaw surgery varies from patient to patient, but typically involves:

  • Initial Healing: Most patients experience the first signs of healing within 4-6 weeks. During this time, a soft food diet is recommended, and patients must avoid strenuous activities. We recommend avoiding contact and ball sports for 3 months post-operatively. Most patients can return to light duties or a desk job in 2-3 weeks.
  • Long-Term Recovery: Full recovery and stabilisation of the jaw can take several months. Dr. Parthasarathi and our team will provide detailed post-operative care instructions, and we will monitor your progress through follow-up appointments to ensure the best results.
